Activities

  • Some of the socially relevant projects undertaken with various NGOs are as follows:

GOONJ

Under the Goonj banner, Jamshedpur Clothes Bank is being opened in XLRI. Around 400,000 clothes were collected during the Joy of Giving week and distributed in villages around Jamshedpur with the help of various NGOs.

SEEDS

SEEDS was involved in donating clothes under the program "Clothes for Work" - A Goonj initiative. Clothes were distributed in Vishrampur and adjacent villages on the eve of Independence Day by SEEDS and SIGMA Members. Clothes and other related items collected during the Joy of Giving week were distributed in the villages near Jamshedpur with the help of the SEEDS team.

NEEV

Neev was involved in distributing clothes collected under the aegis of the Clothes-for-Work program and the Joy of Giving week. Neev also took part in the Shilp Mela , which is a part of annual Maxi Fair conducted in XLRI.

PARICHAY

SIGMA, in collaboration with Parichay launched the Parivartan initiative where artisans, painters and artists were sought out in the villages around Jamshedpur, during the Village Exposure programme conducted by XLRI, so that they could be given the chance to commercialize their skills.

Apart from these NGOs, SIGMA had collaborated with Beyond Profit, IndianNGOs.com and Ashoka Foundation in conducting the Second National Conference on Social Entrepreneurship.

Social Entrepreneurship conference

The 2nd National Conference on Social Entrepreneurship was held at XLRI, Jamshedpur from the 29th Jan to 31 Jan 2010.The theme for the Conference was Solutions for Inclusive Development. The event was designed as a "working conference" which would allow the participants to not just listen, absorb and learn, but also to share, discuss and co-create solutions/alternatives as a take-away, by actively and collectively engaging in solving real, live problems, which are of their interest and concern. Some of the topics discussed by the participants were Market Linkages, Employment Livelihood,Universal Primary Education, Financial Inclusion,Healthcare Hygiene for All,Access to Technology Societal Resources,Grassroot Innovations and Social Volunteerism.The conference received participation from over 150 participants including students, academicians, corporate and well known successful entrepreneurs from the social sector.

ISEL - Initiative for Social Entrepreneurial Leadership

XLRI started a unique initiative as part of its summer internship placement process - ISEL. The program helps interested students intern with social organizations and start-ups for their summer projects. XLRI has always been famous for its social values, and its students have always been interested in working in the social sector. ISEL is a response to a need that has long been felt on campus. The program is envisaged as an integral part of the summer placement process. Among the organizations that have been a part of this program are such eminent names from the social sector as CRY, Azim Premji Foundation, WWF, UNICEF, UNDP, BASIX Group, SKS Microfinance, IFMR etc. SIGMA and CRESENT are part of the initiative. Joy of Giving Week

The Joy of Giving Week(JGW),was celebrated from Sept 27-Oct3,2009 as a national movement,aimed to engage at least two crore Indians in different"acts of giving"- money,time,resources and skills-spanning the corporate, NGO and government sectors,schools,colleges and the general public.As a part of XLRI's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations,XLRI anchored and facilitated the JGW for the city of Jamshedpur as "Jamshedpur JoyFest".During the week,the XLRI students engaged in a variety of acts of volunteerism and giving.They celebrated 'A Day with the Aged' and visited "Nirmal Hrudaya" where they distributed sweets,played music,danced and took their blessings,spent their Dussehra with the Specially Enabled at Cheshire Home;celebrated 'The Day of the Girl Child' by organizing a fun-day for girl children from an orphanage;felicitated the staff by celebrating the 'XL Labour Day' and serving them a lunch, organizing Health Camps in slums and villages for the poor, etc. Sigma, with the help of DRACULA (dramatics team of XLRI) staged street plays around Jamshedpur during the week to promote the initiative.

Along with these initiatives Sigma, XLRI in collaboration with National level NGO Goonj spearheaded a massive clothes collection drive across the city of Jamshedpur, mobilizing clothes from schools, corporates and houses. In all, an estimated 400,000 clothes where collected and distributed in all by this initiative making the entire event a grand success.
