History

XLRI was founded in 1949 by Fr Quinn Enright, S.J. in the Steel City of Jamshedpur. Fr. Enright visualized XLRI to be a partner in the liberation and development journey of the independent India with a vision of "renewing the face of the earth". Fr. Bill Tome joined hands with him to bring that vision to fruition. Both, together with the other Jesuit companions, worked tirelessly towards translating the Vision "Renewing the face of the earth" into action.

Academics

This building has air-conditioned lecture halls, examination hall, computer centre and syndicate rooms all of which contain access-points to the campus-wide network. There are eight state-of-the-art classrooms with in built multimedia presentation support. The seating arrangement is amphitheatre style and each lecture hall seats 70 students. These classrooms also support closed-circuit recording and play-back of lecture sessions. The four Syndicate Rooms are multi-purpose areas for other academic exercises.

Faculty

XLRI has professionally qualified and experienced permanent faculty drawn from various streams of management discipline.A balanced mix of academicians, researchers, and professionals from both public and private sectors and public systems and with rich research and managerial experience contributes to the Institute's academic excellence and character in the country.Part-time and Visiting faculty too contributes to enrich the quality of the core courses and electives offered to the students.

Auditorium

The campus has two state-of-the-art auditoriums, both fully air-conditioned. The Small Auditorium,as the first one is called is the older of the two,with a seating capacity of about 150.This auditorium plays host to internal student events,guest lectures and seminars,and the famed XLRI Student General Body Meetings.The Tata Auditorium,the bigger of the two,has capacity of about 1000 and is known in music circles to have one of the finest acoustic systems in this region.

Alumni

Alumni play significant role in the growth of the institute. They reflect the image of the institute in various walks of life. The institute keeps contact with the alumni through its alumni office. In addition, an alumni newsletter, "The Exceller" is published every quarter. Chapters of the Alumni Association of XLRI have been established to contribute to the professional management of those institutions which serve the public good, especially the ones engaged in rural development, health, education, etc.

Students

XLRI tries to meet the needs of various segments of people by offering variety of programmes. Besides our flagship two-year's full-time Postgraduate Programmes in Business Management and Personnel Management and Industrial Relations, we offer three-year's part time programme in Business Management for executives, full-time one year General Management Programme for executives, three's year part-time programme in Business Management in Dubai and one year part-time Satellite programmes. People can choose any one of them according to their need and preference.

Student's Life

An intense academic rigor and an incredible phenomenon called XL culture combine to produce magic- a hectic heady concoction of work and play. All programmes here being fully residential, the seniors and juniors are an integral part of each other lives. It is hence no surprise that XLRI has the most extensive alumni network among all Indian B-schools. Teamwork is stressed throughout your life at XL.

Library

The library is housed in a spacious and centrally air-conditioned building on the ground floor overlooking the administrative block. The library floor consists mainly of three sections: to the West is the Reading room - cum - stack room for books and to the East is the stack room - cum - reading room, housing books and bound journals and other sources. In the center of the two wings consists Reception Counter for Circulation and Reference sections, lobby and Computer room for CD-ROM and other electronic databases.

IT Infrastructure

Information Technology is unarguably the defining force of this millennium, and XLRI is poised to break new ground as the most e-enabled Business school in India. The initial focus of being systems friendly has now resulted in a virtual flood of e-initiatives. Beginning with the up gradation of infrastructure and supplemented by the introduction of new courses, workshops, seminars and live projects, the creation of a whole new batch of tech-savvy managers with the skills to integrate technology solutions to the workplace environment has begun.

Campus

The institute has a precious campus. It is located in the steel city of Jamshedpur with the scenic setting of the Dalma Hills in the North and the Tata Iron & Steel Company in the South. The Jubilee Park adjacent to institute provides beautiful scenery, fresh air and a healthy environment.

Sports & Recreation

Sports are taken seriously at XL. The fields / courts on campus include basketball, volleyball, badminton and football. Enright Hall in GH1 provides additional facilities for indoor sports and includes a fully equipped gym.

In addition to the facilities on campus, students at XL have access to swimming pools, tennis courts, squash courts and a synthetic athletics track through our affiliations with local sports authorities.

Student Residences

Student Residence facilities at XLRI, consist of four residences with more than 400 rooms in all. There are two Gents Residences (The Fr. Enright Men's Residence and The St. Thomas Men's Residence) and two Ladies Residences (The Nilima Acharji Women's Residence and The Mother Teresa Women's Residence. The Residences are well equipped with facilities such as phones, water filters, coolers and common rooms, which create a homely atmosphere. Every Residence has access points linking to the Local Area Network and the various network resources and services.
