For Working Executives

True to the spirit of the statement that the ultimate success parameter for Human Resource Development is the death of HR Department, Organizations are increasingly becoming appreciative of the developmental role that their managers must play in developing employees. While many a line manager has that basic urge to develop the employees, more often than not they are handicapped by a lack of professional knowledge and skills that are essential to play the HR role effectively. It is also very common for such managers occupying positions in the HR department in many organizations in India without having adequate professional qualifications. While experience might have been the backbone of effective performance in the corporate world of yesterday, knowledge and continuous learning is the mainstay amongst the best organizations of today.

It is against this backdrop that XLRI has started a consolidated program in Human Resource management in 2005. The program aims to provide an opportunity for them to study and earn an Executive Diploma in HRM, while working, without interrupting their career.

Program Objectives

Program Pedagogy

The above stated objectives will be attained through:

An intensive program useful from a corporate management view point.

  • 50 days of intensive learning at XLRI campus through 5 visits.
  • Project-based courses.
  • Lecture series.
  • Case methods.
  • Group work.
  • Assignments.
  • Dissertation
Program Duration and structure

The Programme is of 16 month duration. The total number of courses are 15 (fifteen) and are slated from Term-I to Term V for contact classes, while Term VI for Dissertation. Each course consists of 12 sessions of 90 minutes.

Each course is designed for 100 hours with 18 hours of classroom contact hours and 82 hours of individual and group input.

In the first five terms, there will be one contact session each, which will be residential in nature. Each course will have 10-12 days contact sessions.

There will be four sessions per day of 90 minutes each. Internal faculty will handle two courses while an external resource person (preferably a practitioner) may handle the third. The schedule may be flexible.

Courses in the programme are designed to:

  • provide basic conceptual and analytical knowledge; Inculcate attitudes and skills required for managerial effectiveness,
  • provide the participants with an in-depth understanding of various concepts in HR, latest development and update in the field,
  • develop an integrated view of organisational and managerial functioning and an understanding of the interdependencies of subsystems,
  • create an awareness and understanding of environmental forces impinging on managerial behaviour, prepare the participants to head the HR function in the operating divisions.

The programme incorporates a Dissertation, which will be initiated in the fourth term and completed by the end of sixth term. The participant will choose an area of his/her interest; closely work with the faculty guide. S/he will identify a problem related to HR. It is suggested that the project is an action research based. The project is equivalent to three courses of a term. It is suggested that the student has an internal guide from their organization for the project. However, the evaluation will be done by the XLRI faculty guide.

Assessment, Evaluation and Certification

The examination and evaluation required for certification shall be carried out by XLRI, Jamshedpur. The faculty members teaching their respective courses will choose the method of evaluation most appropriate to the material. The certificate will be awarded directly by XLRI, Jamshedpur. Each concerned faculty will evaluate the participants. Assessment in all the courses is continuous, varied and exacting. It emphasizes development of personal and professional competence as well as gaining of business knowledge and skills. After successful completion of all the courses the participants will be awarded an "Executive Diploma in HRM".

Admission Process

The following criteria would be used for selection:


  • Bachelors degree (minimum of three years full time study) from a recognized university in any discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years of post-degree full time work experience in managerial positions

Eligible candidate registered for the programme will be shortlisted and called for Interview (Personal/Skype). Final selection will be based on the performance of interview.

The next batch would commence in December 2019

Tentative Dates

On Campus:

  • Term I December 09 - 18, 2019
  • Term II February 12 - 21, 2020
  • Term III April 15 - 24, 2020
  • Term IV July 15 - 24, 2020
  • Term V October 27 - November 07, 2020

Off Campus:

  • Term VI Dissertation Submission : January 31, 2021


The fee for the programme will be Rs. 4.1 lakhs + Service Tax per candidate. This will include tuition fees and other infrastructure necessities as required for an effective academic programme. This will not include board and lodging expenses.

Other expenses

Travel, board and lodging expenses will have to be borne by the participants. Accommodations will be provided in the campus on twin sharing basis.

Registration will start on May 15, 2019
