Fr Dr Joseph Mathew, S.J., is Chair Professor of the JRD Tata Chair for Business Ethics and Faculty in Organisational Behaviour and General Management at XLRI. His academic applied knowledge integrates Business Ethics, Organisational Behaviour, General Management, and Applied Psychological Science in both teaching and research. He also serves as co-ordinator of the Centre for Spirituality and Human Development at XLRI, advancing the integration of spirituality into management and organisational life, human flourishing, and ethical leadership.
His expertise in teaching, research and programme development encompasses managerial and business ethics, ethical leadership, organisational behaviour, stress management, mental health and wellbeing and organisational counselling, within corporate and industrial settings. He actively partners with industry and corporate leaders to design and implement impactful ethics and wellbeing initiatives, empowering organisations to enhance their ethical culture, leadership practices, and employee care systems through dynamic workshops and comprehensive training programmes.
His research focuses on psychological interventions grounded in established theories of human behaviour and emotional processing to address psychological and behavioural challenges in both organisational and clinical settings, with a particular emphasis on psychological processing and business ethics from an Indian perspective. This includes integrating behavioural psychology and cognitive neuropsychology and employing behavioural experiments using methods such as Electroencephalography (EEG), Event-Related Potentials (ERP), Eye-Tracking, and Psychometric Tools to understand behavioural, emotional, and decision-making processes, as well as psychological wellbeing.
He specialises in applied behavioural and organisational psychology and therapeutic interventions, particularly focusing on Positive Psychology, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and spirituality to enhance emotional processing and well-being. His extensive training and specialisation include a variety of modalities—such as psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), person-centred and experiential therapies, Transactional Analysis (TA), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). This diverse background enabled the tailoring of experiential process model interventions to meet client needs, support organisational contexts, and achieve behavioural change goals.
Across these domains, his deep passion and aspiration align with XLRI's vision of forming men and women for others for the greater common good, and its mission to nurture socially responsible, globally ethical leaders through management education. This drives contributions to holistic well-being across individuals, communities, organisations, corporations, and industries facing ethical and psychosocial challenges. By integrating organisational psychology, behavioural science, and business ethics, he partners with industry to design evidence-based interventions and ethical architectures that strengthen leadership, culture, and mental health—transforming workplaces into humane, resilient, high-performing ecosystems sustained by compassion, empathy, and human-centred commitment to the global greater common good.
